Lakeland County Park is one of the parks most have probably never heard of or known even existed.
The park is located in an area near major roads but tucked away in the middle of residential house developments. The parking lot is paved and has plenty of spaces for the size of the little park. Cops and public safety went by and stopped in on a little patrol which makes you feel a little safe.
The park includes facilities as well as a playground for kids. There are picnic tables as well and all adjacent to the parking lot.
The park trail begins across from the facilities and begins as a wooden boardwalk as it spans over marsh and water. The boardwalk goes in a few directions with a couple of the offshoots terminating at points for observation.
Most arms of the boardwalk lead to terrain trails that go either around the perimeter of the park or to the lake. One trail in the park is even part of the Greenbelt Trail that connects several parks on the island from north at Sunken Meadow to south at Heckscher while including the likes of Connetquot State Park, Blydenburgh State Park, Caleb Smith State Park, and Nissequogue River State Park to name a few.
Any of the numerous trails that lead from north to south in the park will take you to the railroad tracks. At the south end of the park, there is a small trestle that allows passage below the railway and allows for the continuation from Lakeland County Park to the Connetquot Preserve that is the northern part of the trail leading away from Connetquot State Park and allows for the choice to increase the walk by several miles if one is inclined.
The park is quaint and really gives the feel of nature in a suburban area. The kids and dogs can also enjoy it so it’s perfect for the family to get outside and see animals like ducks, geese, swans, squirrels, and hawks.
Now, just get out there and enjoy a mini adventure.
