If you are looking for a scenic and peaceful place to enjoy nature and learn about Long Island’s history, you might want to check out Northwest Woods and Grace Estate Nature Preserve. Located in East Hampton, these two adjacent properties offer a variety of trails, habitats, and historical features that will appeal to hikers, birders, and history buffs alike.

Northwest Woods

Northwest Woods is a 187-acre preserve owned by the Town of East Hampton and managed by The Nature Conservancy. It features a network of trails that wind through oak and pine forests, wetlands, and meadows. Along the way, you can spot wildlife such as deer, foxes, turkeys, woodpeckers, and songbirds. You can also see evidence of the area’s past human inhabitants, such as stone walls, cellar holes, and Native American artifacts.

One of the highlights of Northwest Woods is the Paumanok Path, a 125-mile trail that spans the length of Long Island from Rocky Point to Montauk Point. The trail passes through Northwest Woods and connects to other preserves and parks along the way. You can follow the Paumanok Path for a short or long hike, depending on your preference and ability.

Grace Estate

Grace Estate is a 516-acre preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy. It was once the home of John M. Grace, a wealthy businessman and philanthropist who bought the land in 1902. He built a mansion, a farm, and several cottages on the property, which he used as a summer retreat. He also planted thousands of trees and shrubs to create a beautiful landscape.

Today, Grace Estate is open to the public for hiking and observing nature. You can explore the trails that lead to the mansion ruins, the farm buildings, the cottages, and the gardens. You can also enjoy views of Gardiners Bay and Accabonac Harbor from various points on the preserve. Along the way, you can see a variety of plants and animals, such as holly, mountain laurel, osprey, herons, egrets, and turtles.

How to Visit

Northwest Woods and Grace Estate are located in East Hampton, New York. You can access them from Northwest Road or Old Northwest Road. There are parking areas and trailheads at both entrances. The trails are open for hiking and observing nature from dawn to dusk. Dogs are allowed on leash.
