If you are looking for a place to enjoy nature, history and romance, look no further than Lovers Leap State Park in New Milford, Connecticut. This 160-acre park has something for everyone, from hiking trails and scenic vistas to historic ruins and a legendary love story. Here are some reasons why you should visit this beautiful park:
The Bridge
One of the first things you will notice when you enter the park is the 1895 Berlin Iron Bridge, one of only five remaining in Connecticut. This bridge crosses the Housatonic River and connects the park to the town of New Milford. The bridge is a historic landmark and a great spot to take photos and admire the river views.
The Trail
The main trail in the park is the Lovers Leap Trail, which leads you to the rock formation that gives the park its name. The trail is about 1,200 feet long and easy to follow. Along the way, you will see signs that tell you about the history and ecology of the park. You will also pass by some industrial era ruins, such as a brick kiln and a sawmill, that remind you of the past uses of the land.
The Rock
The highlight of the trail is the Lovers Leap Rock, a cliff that overlooks the river and offers a spectacular panoramic view. This is where the legend of Princess Lillinonah and her lover comes to life. According to tradition, Princess Lillinonah was the daughter of Chief Waramaug of the Pootatuck tribe, who lived in the area in the 18th century. She fell in love with an English settler, but he left her to return to his homeland. Heartbroken, she paddled her canoe to the edge of the cliff and jumped into the water. When her lover returned and learned of her fate, he followed her into the depths. Their spirits are said to haunt the rock and the river ever since.
The Romance
Whether you believe in the legend or not, there is no denying that Lovers Leap Rock is a romantic spot. You can imagine yourself as part of a star-crossed love story, or simply enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature with your partner. You can also explore other parts of the park, such as the picnic area, the fishing spots and the observation tower, and make your own memories.
