My Amazing Trip to Hammocks Beach State Park 🏖️

I had the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches on the Atlantic coast: Hammocks Beach State Park. Located in Onslow County, North Carolina, this state park comprises a mainland area and three barrier islands, including the 4-mile-long Bear Island. The only way to get to the island is by passenger ferry or private boat, which adds to the sense of adventure and isolation. Unfortunately, we only got to visit the mainland trails that day but it was still a beautifully, peaceful walk.

Check out our video to get a glimpse of the mainland trails!

What to do at Hammocks Beach State Park

There are so many things to do at Hammocks Beach State Park that you will never get bored. Here are some of the activities you can enjoy during your stay:

  • Camping: Camp on Bear Island, which offers 14 primitive campsites with picnic tables, grills, and access to drinking water and restrooms. The campsites are located near the beach, so you can enjoy the sound of the waves and the breeze. You can also camp on Huggins Island or Jones Island, which are boat-in only sites. Camping fees are $15 per night for a regular site and $35 per night for a group site. You can make reservations online or by calling (910) 326-4881.
  • Hiking: There are 2.3 miles of hiking trails on the mainland, where you can explore the maritime forest and marshes. On Bear Island, you can hike along the 4 miles of beach or take a short loop trail to the lighthouse and back. The views are stunning and you might spot some wildlife, such as deer, raccoons, shorebirds, and sea turtles.
  • Paddling: One of the best ways to experience Hammocks Beach State Park is by paddling through the waterways that surround the islands. You can rent or bring your own kayak, canoe, or paddleboard and follow the marked paddle trails. You can also join a guided tour offered by a private concessionaire in the park. Paddling is a great way to see the diverse habitats and ecosystems of the park, such as salt marshes, tidal creeks, oyster reefs, and maritime swamp forests.
  • Swimming: Of course, you can’t miss swimming in the clear and warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach at Bear Island is pristine and uncrowded, with soft sand and gentle waves. There is a designated swimming area with lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is also a bathhouse with showers and changing rooms. Swimming is allowed at your own risk outside of the designated area and season.
  • Fishing: If you love fishing, you will be happy to know that Hammocks Beach State Park offers some excellent fishing opportunities. You can fish from the beach, the pier, or your boat. You can catch a variety of fish species, such as flounder, red drum, speckled trout, bluefish, pompano, and more. You will need a valid North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License to fish in the park.
  • Picnicking: After a day of fun and exploration, you can relax and enjoy a picnic at one of the picnic areas in the park. There are two picnic areas on the mainland, one near the visitor center and one near the boat ramp. There are also picnic tables and grills on Bear Island near the ferry dock. You can bring your own food or buy some snacks and drinks from the concession stand (seasonal).
